Personal Property Tax Savings Checklist

Personal property tax is one of the most frequently overlooked line items in state and local taxation. Filings get made on time, the bill gets paid, and nobody asks whether the number underneath it was right.

Work through the questions below to find where your current approach may be leaving value on the table.

Exemptions And Incentives

Exemptions vary by state, by jurisdiction, and by asset type. Most are not applied automatically. They have to be claimed, and they have to be supported.

  • Have you claimed all eligible state and local exemptions?
  • Are you using available economic development incentives or credits?
  • Have you reviewed exemptions specific to machinery, equipment, and raw materials?

Refund And Overpayment Review

Past filings are not closed questions. Where an overpayment can be documented, amended returns and refund claims are often available.

  • Have you conducted a tax exposure assessment to identify overpayments?
  • Have you reviewed historical filings for inconsistencies or errors?
  • Are there opportunities to file amended returns and reclaim overpaid tax?

Compliance And Audit Readiness

The question is not whether your filings are defensible in principle. It is whether the documentation exists today to defend them if an auditor asked tomorrow.

  • Is documentation in place for asset classifications and valuations?
  • Are filings and payments audit ready?
  • Have you conducted a self audit to identify risk?

Evaluating Your Current Provider

A provider who files accurately and on time is meeting the minimum. The question is whether anyone is looking for savings.

  • Does your provider proactively identify savings, or file returns?
  • Have you compared your property tax costs against industry peers?
  • Has anyone reviewed your filings for missed opportunities in the last two years?

What Your Answers Mean

If you answered no or unsure to any question above, there is likely room between what you are being assessed and what your assets actually warrant. A tax exposure assessment identifies where that gap sits before any broader engagement begins.
